I was late for Mr Burton’s English class. I took my seat while Burton – who at 30 is the youngest of three assistant heads at the school – was asking his Year 10 students to think about words and their meanings. The 25 students were using glue-sticks to put words such as ‘terrorist’, ‘militant’, ‘martyr’ and ‘mercenary’ alongside photographs. ‘What’s a martyr?’ someone asked. There was something rather endearing, I thought, in those words being unfamiliar. This was Dewsbury, after all, where Mohammad Sidique Khan, the leader of the 7/7 terror attacks in London, lived, and where in June this year six Muslim men who were planning to attack the English Defence League were jailed for a total of more than 100 years.
